Which Language and Tone Suits Whom?

WhoLanguage and toneExample opener
Parents and eldersHindi or Gujarati, respectful"दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं!"
Gujarati relativesGujarati, warm"સાલ મુબારક!"
FriendsHinglish, playful"Dost, tere jaisa dost ho toh..."
ColleaguesEnglish, friendly and simple"Warm Diwali greetings from our team..."
CustomersEnglish, Hindi or Gujarati, thankful"Thank you for your trust this year..."

How to Send Diwali Wishes the Right Way

  1. Match the language to the person. Wish elders in the language they speak at home. A Gujarati wish for a Gujarati-speaking grandparent means more than an English one.
  2. Add the person's name. "Happy Diwali, Kaka!" feels personal in a way a plain forward does not.
  3. Pick the format. Text for most people, a voice note for relatives far away, a call for parents and grandparents, a card when you visit.
  4. Send at a good time. Diwali morning or early evening is easier to reply to than late night.

Etiquette for Colleagues and Customers

  • Keep it professional. A short, warm line is enough. Avoid jokes that only close friends would understand.
  • No gift pressure. Don't hint at gifts, bonuses or Diwali offers in a greeting. If you have a festive offer, send it separately.
  • Send from the right number. Use your business number for customers and your personal number for friends and family.
  • Respect everyone's festival. Some customers and colleagues may not celebrate Diwali. A general "Wishing you a happy festive season" works well for mixed groups.
