Diwali 2026 kab hai? What is the exact date?

Diwali (Lakshmi Puja, the main day) is on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The Amavasya tithi that evening is when Lakshmi Puja is performed across India.

What are the dates of all five days of Diwali 2026?

Dhanteras: Friday, November 6. Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi): Saturday, November 7. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja): Sunday, November 8. Govardhan Puja: Monday, November 9. Bhai Dooj: Wednesday, November 11.

What happens on each day of Diwali?

Each of the five days has its own focus. Use this table to plan what to buy, cook and prepare before each day arrives.

DayMain ritualWhat to keep ready
DhanterasBuying gold, silver, utensils or a new broom; evening Lakshmi-Kubera puja and the Yama Deepam diya at the doorShopping list, budget, a diya for the main door

In Gujarat, Diwali festivities traditionally begin two days earlier on Agyaras and continue till Labh Panchami, and in Maharashtra they start a day earlier on Govatsa Dwadashi (Vasu Baras), as noted in the Drik Panchang Diwali calendar.

Why is Diwali on November 8 and not November 9?

Lakshmi Puja is done on the day when the Amavasya tithi is present during Pradosh kaal, the period just after sunset. For New Delhi, Drik Panchang shows the Amavasya tithi beginning at 11:27 AM on November 8 and ending at 12:31 PM on November 9, 2026, so the evening of Sunday, November 8 is the Lakshmi Puja evening (as of Oct 2026, Drik Panchang).

When should we do Dhanteras shopping?

Dhanteras on November 6 is considered the most auspicious day to buy gold, silver, utensils and new items for the home. Jewellery stores and markets run their biggest festive offers that day, so expect crowds in the evening.

How to plan puja at home?

Clean and decorate the house in the week before, draw rangoli at the entrance, and keep diyas, flowers, sweets and puja samagri ready by November 8 morning. Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening during pradosh kaal - check your city's exact muhurat in a local panchang.

Diwali preparation checklist (one week before)

  • Deep-clean one room a day so the work does not pile up on the last two days.
  • Throw out or donate broken items and clothes nobody uses.
  • Check old diyas, string lights and extension boards; replace anything with loose wires.
  • Buy oil or ghee, cotton wicks, rangoli colours, matchboxes and extra diyas early.
  • Puja samagri: kumkum, haldi, rice (akshat), flowers, incense, a small kalash, coins, sweets and a clean red or yellow cloth.
  • Business families: keep the new account book (chopda) and pen ready for the Diwali puja.
  • Order sweets and gifts early, and plan any travel to family before the festive rush.

Simple Lakshmi Puja steps at home

  1. Clean the puja place and spread a clean cloth on a small chowki or table.
  2. Place the images or idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, with a kalash, flowers, sweets and coins in front.
  3. Light the main diya and incense, apply kumkum and haldi, and offer flowers and rice.
  4. Say the prayers or mantras your family follows, then do the aarti together.
  5. Light diyas in every room, at the windows and at the main door, and share prasad.

Every family has its own way of doing the puja, so follow your elders or family priest where your tradition differs from these steps.

Diwali safety tips

  • Keep diyas and candles away from curtains, paper decorations, rangoli powder and loose clothes.
  • Place diyas out of reach of small children and pets, and never leave a lit diya unattended.
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand near the place where you light crackers, and follow your local rules on crackers.
  • Wear cotton clothes while lighting diyas and crackers, and keep a first-aid kit at home.
